> Don (Donald) Young, of Cy Ranch near Klamath Falls, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2014, in Medford with his partner, Phyllis Shidler, at his side. His daughter, Donna June {Young} White, had come to be with him and Phyllis during his latest illness.
> Don and Phyllis bred and trained cutting horses for 25 years at their ranch on Schaupp Rd. Don had been doing this activity for many years in Arizona and California before coming to Oregon while Phyllis worked as an accountant. He raised, trained, and showed horses in Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Tombstone, AZ; and also Lancaster and Acton, CA.
> Donald Denton Young was the oldest of 5 children of Davis Seaton Young of Kentucky and Velma Gretta Umberger of Michigan. Don was born in Walnut Park, Los Angeles Co, CA, on June 26, 1936.
> His father was a general contractor and carpenter who later owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store (Young's Market) in South Gate, CA. His father passed away in 1966 at the family store and his mother passed away in the hospital in 1987.
> The family started out on Long Beach Blvd in Lynwood, CA, before moving around the corner to Century Blvd. They stayed here until about 1951 when they moved to Wymore Street in Compton and then in about 1952 to the family store at 13308 Paramount Blvd in the Hollydale District of South Gate, CA.
> While in Lynwood, Don discovered his passion and skills in horses and spent most of his free time up the street at the stables and horse pasture at the intersection of Century Blvd and Abbot Rd. Sometime around 1947, Don contracted polio and spent a lot of time at Orthopedic Hospital in Los Angeles undergoing treatment and physical therapy. He did not let this disease keep him from working with his beloved horses and he became an excellent trainer and rider of horses.
> He married Olive Sophia Utley in Lynwood, CA, and they had one child, Donna June White, who shares his passion for horses. Donna's husband, Keith, was a farrier. Olive passed away in 1997 in Lancaster, CA.

> He is survived by his business and life partner, Phyllis Shidler, of Klamath Falls, OR; her son Russell and her grandchildren, Ryan, Jason, Candice and Dustin. Also survived by his daughter Donna June White (Keith) of Rosamond, CA; 2 brothers, Davis of Downey, CA, and Bill (Meredith) of Exeter, CA; two sisters, Velma Jane Grewal of Nashville, TN, and Barbara Ann Rose of Yucaipa, CA.
> Ashes interred in Bedfield Cemetery in Poe Valley in the Shidler plot.
