Killed in the line of duty when B-17G
Flying Fortress #42-38119 crashed on take
off from Kearney airfield when the bomber
failed to again sufficient altitude and
collided with rising terrain, and skidded
and crashed through trees, bursting into
flames. Six airmen perished, but four
survived (the pilot and co-pilot included)
when they escaped through cockpit windows.
Hometown of record: Gheen, Minn.
The other five Army men killed were:
2nd Lt. Thaddeus Kleszcz
2nd Lt. Elmer L Tully, Jr
Sgt. Keith M Cochrane
Sgt. Gerald C Fitzpatrick
Sgt. George H Satterlee
