Italian famous violin-maker, born in Cremona. His workmanship brought the violin to perfection. During his career he produced at least 1,100 finest instruments, violins, violas, cellos, guitars. Several of his violins survive and they are more desired by players than those of any other artisan instrument maker. The secret of his unmatched mastery remains elusive. Some believe it to be in the varnish he used; this is a subject of controversy. He was still making violins when he was more than 85 years of age. He had 2 wives and 11 children; two of his sons worked with him and continued the craft after his death.
