Emil, born the 8th of 9 children, came to America on his own at the age of 16, in 1884. He settled in Chicago where some of his older siblings had already established. He became a US Citizen in 1888 and married his wife Malin (also a Swedish immigrant) in 1891. He was the father to 8 children, all born in the United States. He began his career in Chicago as a wood pattern maker, and started his own company, South Side Pattern and Model Shop, near the Stockyards in 1911. He became a homeowner in 1915, near Ogden Park, at 6641 S Hermitage Ave, where he lived until his death. He was a proud member of the Masons.
