Information from the Goble Family Association:

The village of Goblesville, Van Buren County, MI takes its name from the Goble family of father Nathaniel (7) and Elizabeth "Betsey" Hinchey Goble. The town originated about 1867 when John (8) Goble built a hotel, and brother Hiram (8) built a general store.

The Goble line:

(1) Thomas.
(2) Daniel.
(3) Daniel or David.
(4) Jonas.
(5) Ezekial.
(6) Eliel.
(7) Nathaniel.

_____

It is quite confusing about the burial location of Nathaniel's first wife Elizabeth "Betsey" Hinchey. As the links show, Betsey was originally buried in the Wheatland Baptist Church Cemetery in Wheatland, Monore, NY, as was their son, William. After Betsey died, Nathaniel married a woman named Delilah (no children) and they moved to Michigan.

There is no record of Delilah's death and I have not found a memorial for her at all, yet Betsey is so very well memorialized in this cemetery in Michigan. I feel certain that Betsey was buried in Wheatland and this is where she remains, as does their son William.

_____

Lack of records, and lack of cooperation by Find A Graver "Butterfly-Kisses," have added to the problem of sorting out the truth. I keep working on it. But that is not Elizabeth "Betsey" (Hinchey) Goble's problem. She is at rest, and has been since 1838.

_____

Thank goodness that, at one time, some responsible person captured Betsey's burial on a transcript of Wheatland Baptist Cemetery -- this transcript is no longer available online, and has been replaced by another one which does not list Betsey at all. And thank goodness that some other responsible person (known as PaPa G) took a picture of her gravestone in Wheatland Baptist Cemetery. Little did we know that these two acts would later serve as proof of her existence. And proof of son William's existence. And proof that Betsey and Nathaniel were William's parents.

Elizabeth "Betsey" Hinchey was the mother of all of Nathaniel Goble's children. I destroyed my notes for Betsey and Nathaniel after I wrote her biography on the memorial I created for her in Wheatland Baptist Cemetery, which was later deleted. I waited a year for it to be posted on her original memorial, and when nothing was happening, despite follow-up, I felt I had no recourse. Unfortunately, I was not following policy, and my work was lost because of it. Given time, I will try to make this right on Nathaniel's memorial.

_____

It is extremely nice that photo volunteer Jim Lyles has captured so well Betsey's memorial in Oak Hill Cemetery. I think Betsey remains in Wheatland, but Jim puts up a good case that she may have been moved to Oakland County MI later. I believe that Betsey's marker in Oak Hill Cemetery is a cenotaph.

A July 1859 New York probate record suggests he was late of LeRoy, NY but "departed this life in Pontiac in the State of Michigan" on 20 Sep 1858 (it was probably 21 Sep 1858, and only the death year was miscut on his headstone). Although his headstone lists his death date as 21 Sep 1859 this would conflict with report of his death in his July 1859 probate record, as well as the dates of two other of his probate records which predate Sep 1859.

Suggested edit: Here is a link to the probated will of Nathaniel Goble wherein it states he died 20 September 1858 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York (not 1859 as shown on the headstone). The full will can be seen on the previous page.

Nathaniel's son Warren presented the will in the Genesee County Court and it was proven 5 Sep 1859. Nathaniel's second wife Delilah is named in the will. She can be found in the 1850 census with her husband Nathaniel Goble in Wheatland, Monroe, New York, and in the household of her stepson A N (Albert Nathaniel) Goble in the 1860 census in Pontiac, Oakland, Michigan. The year of death on the headstone is in error.
