As a group of bombers were getting into a
formation after takeoff, for a flight eastward
to head to the European theater of the war,
the B-17, piloted by Lt. Lence, suddenly, for
reasons not determined, nose dived into the
ground from about 2,000 feet elevation.
All aboard were killed.
The nine other Army aviators were:
