OBITUARY Midland Daily News May 18 2014 "Obituaries: Bob Zimmerman"
Bob Zimmerman, 88, a resident of Midland since 1950, died May 13, 2014, at Health Source in Freeland after a lengthy illness. He was born in Douglas, Wyo., in 1925 to Charles and Mildred (Metcalf) Zimmerman. His early years were spent on the family sheep ranch. When he turned seven, the family moved to Los Angeles, Calif. He continued to summer in Wyoming on the ranch through the 1930s. He attended Berkley Hall School in Los Angeles, received his bachelor's degree from Principia College in St. Louis, and his master's degree in chemistry from UCLA.
During World War II, after intense schooling at the University of Redlands and Columbia University, he was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Navy and stationed in Quincy, Mass. He was training on a mine sweeper there preparing for the invasion of Japan when the war ended.
A chemist at Dow Chemical from 1950 through the middle 1970s, Zimmerman worked in Nuclear Basic Research and held or contributed to many patents related to polymeric coatings, laminates, and resins. He received two worldwide citations in the 1960s for his inventions.
After leaving Dow, Zimmerman sold real estate for a number of brokers in Midland, meeting his wife of 32 years, Marie, in the mix. He also acquired a number of apartment homes and buildings, which he owned and managed for nearly 40 years.
In 1988, Zimmerman started Honorable Mention, a trophy and awards business. He owned and operated the business until just a year ago. It is still operated in Midland by Patricia Seeburger, who worked with him for 26 years.
Zimmerman was an avid golfer, alpine skier, sailor, fisherman, and hunter. He hunted in Wyoming annually through his 86th year, and fished in Canada with his sons and grandson through his 87th. The chalet he and his wife owned in the Glen Arbor area was his favorite escape; a place to spend time with family and friends. As his health declined, he sorely missed his golf outings and his hunting and fishing excursions, but enjoyed the company of his many Midland friends.
Zimmerman is survived and fondly remembered by his wife, Marie Griffin Zimmerman of Midland; his five children, Bob (Kathy) Zimmerman of Littleton Mass., Bruce (Solange) Zimmerman of Concord Mass., Darcey (Dick) James of Banner Elk, N.C., Katy Herman of Midland and Betsy (Patrick) Beldock of Vicksburg. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Emily Zimmerman and William Zimmerman of Somerville, Mass., Peter Zimmerman of Park City, Utah, Caroline Zimmerman of Fountainbleau, France, Lara Zimmerman of Arlington, Mass., Thomas Zimmerman of Concord, Mass., Ashley, Katelyn, and Hunter Herman, all of Midland. He was very close to Marie's four children, Dale (the late Klint) Safford of Iron River, Craig Griffin and Jill (Ed) Martin of Midland, Rachel Anger of Wayne and their children, Sandy Safford of Cheboygan, Jackie Safford of Iron River, Holly Safford of Baraga County, Sam Safford of Tampa, Fla., Luke Safford of Ontonagon, Mark (Sheila) Martin of Freeland, Matt Martin of Sanford, Andrew Martin of Midland, Petty Officer 2nd Class Jordan Anger of Jacksonville, Fla., Justin Anger of Wayne and their grandchildren, Chelsie (Chris) Lange of Farmington Hills, Easton and Elaina Martin, and their mother Stacey Martin of Midland, and Jayda Safford of Iron River.
A private memorial service will be held in June. Those planning an expression are asked to consider Midland People to People International, President, 2217 Maple Leaf Dr., Midland, MI 48640
Arrangements for Robert have been entrusted to the care of Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Directors (of Midland).
