Ellen Margaret (Gandsey) Cornwell, 84, of 52C Glean Meade Drive, Portsmouth, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005 at home. She was the wife of Grant H. Cornwell of Portsmouth.

Born in Hibbing, Minn. on July 14, 1920, she was a daughter of George F. and Etna (MacIntosh) Grandsey. She was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Virginia, Minn. and Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where she received a BA in chemistry and biology. Mrs. Cornwell also completed a one-year course in advanced medical technology at the University of Buffalo Medical School — Buffalo General Hospital — and worked as an analytical chemist for a pharmaceutical firm.

Mrs. Cornwell was active in Skidmore alumnae associations and the Women's College Board in Chicago. She served as president to the Chicago Alumnae Club and the Fairfield Alumnae Club. A lifelong Episcopalian, Mrs. Cornwell was a Sunday school teacher and member of several altar guilds. She served as presidents of the Service Guild in three parishes and the Episcopal Churchwomen in two. Her main interests have always been her home, family and creative crafts including miniatures.

Besides her husband she leaves four children, Mary Katharine Cornwell Lundberg of Portsmouth, George Rathbun Cornwell III of Austin, Texas, Thomas Gregory Cornwell of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Grant Hermans Cornwell, Jr. of Canton, N.Y.; a brother, George Edward Gandsey of Algonquin, Ill.; a sister, Mary Gregory (Gandsey) Coffin of Huntsville, Ala.; nine grandchildren, Gregory Hartman Lundberg of Larchmont, N.Y., Thomas Gregory Cornwell, Jr. of Seattle, George Rathbun Cornwell IV of Atlanta, Brendon Gandsey Cornwell of Atlanta, Sara Cornwell Lundberg of Portsmouth, Christian Blackard Cornwell of Big Sky, Mont., Adam Grant Cornwell of Atlanta, Kelsey MacIntosh Cornwell of Canton, N.Y., MacIntosh Grant Cornwell of Canton, N.Y.; and seven great-grandchildren. She was also the grandmother of the late Grant Hermans (Tanner) Cornwell III.

Her funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Episopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in St. Mary's Churchyard. Donations in her memory can be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport & Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, R.I., 02871.
