John resided on Rocky River where he is listed in the 1800-1850 censuses of Chatham Co. Since he was a year younger than his cousin John Fox (son of David) he was commonly referred to as John Jr, such as in Feb 1797 when he recorded his cattle ear mark in Chatham Co. At the time of his death John owned 875 acres. By will dated 27 Apr 1848 John left 115 a (Woody Place) to his daughter Martha, 560 a to daughter Dorcas and the 200 acre home place to jointly to Martha and Dorcas.

The following tracts of land in Chatham Co were purchased by John Fox of Nicholas and distributed as follows.

20 June 1798 340 a on Brush Creek waters on Rocky River located near Stinson's, Fox's, and John Smith's land from Joseph Rosser. This tract was sold 4 Mar 1847 by John to Orren U Ward and was then described as 339 a on the waters of Rocky River branch corner of widow Ward's land. Jacob Fox's line, Culberson's line, and Ely Smith's line.

28 Jan 1814 190 a on the north fork of Rocky River near Benjamin Hinshaw's William Vestal's and Thomas Pugh's lands purchased from the other heirs of his father Nicholas: Robert Stinson Sr, and David Vestal witnessed. (It is probable that this tract plus additional land the later possibly land grants comprised the 560 a left by John to his daughter Dorcas).

28 Aug 1815 200 a on Rocky River from Daniel Ellis with John's son Barney witnessing. This tact was referred to as the home place when willed by John to his daughters Dorcas and Martha.

Census records suggest there were three or four additional daughters probably dying young. John's wife Mary Howell came from a Quaker family, also two of their children married members of quaker families and the entire family were buried in thr Rocky River Friends Cem. It is presumed that the M A Fox ans the M F Fox buried on John Fox's lot were his wife Mary and daughter Martha. Also on John's lot is the tombstone of his Daughter Dorcas, "Darkas Hinshaw wife of Larkin Hinshaw 1814-1898". This is the only early Fox family in Chatham Co that were nominal Quakers.
