Sam died at Genesis Medical Center-West, following a brief illness. He married Gerard on June 1, 1944. After serving as a flight instructor in the Army Air Corp, he went on to retire from Samsonite in 1985. Survivors included: sister Beth Barnaby; children Shirley Besst (Ron), Coretta Samuel, and Douglas "Geno" Samuel (Diana); grandchildren Kelvin Short and Luann Herch, Kelli Besst, Scott and Amy Besst, Bobbie Jo Trude, Joshua and Denise Trude, Jennifer Trude, and Tia Samuel.
