Major League Baseball Player. A tall right-handed pitcher, he is remembered for his four year career in the 1950s, all of it, unfortunately, with bad teams. Raised in South Florida, he was a star athlete at West Palm Beach High School then during World War II served in the US Army in the European Theater. After the conflict, Gray earned a degree from Rollins College and in 1950 was signed as a free agent by the New York Yankees. Following four seasons in the Minors, in December of 1953 he was traded to the Philadelphia A's, at that time a sort of unofficial Yankees' farm team. Gray broke into the Majors with Philadelphia in 1954, then in 1955 moved with the A's to Kansas City. After going back to the AAA level for 1956, he spent 1957 with the Cleveland Indians, during that season experiencing his career's high point when he tossed a three-hit shutout against the Baltimore Orioles. He served as a reliever for the 1958 Philadelphia Phillies, stayed in the minors until 1960, then retired, finishing with Big League totals of 4 wins, 18 losses, a 6.18 E.R.A., and 75 strikeouts. After leaving the diamond he worked as an apartment manager and became a feared amateur golfer. He died in a hospice facility of the complications of advanced age.
