Rex J. Napora, 82, of 7441 00.25 Road, Garden, Michigan passed away unexpectedly on June 2, 2014 at his home in Garden Township.

He was born September 15, 1931 in Saginaw, Michigan the son of Frank and Beatrice Noreen (Smith) Napora and graduated from high school there.

During the Korean War, he served as a runner in the U.S. Army seeing duty in Korea.

On June 28, 1985 he married the former Judith M. Farley in Saginaw. They made their home in Saginaw until Rex's retirement and moved back to the Garden peninsula 23 years ago.

Rex was employed as a Journeyman Iron Worker on various construction jobs throughout the United States. He was a member of the Iron Workers Local #25 in Detroit.

Rex was also a member of the Garden American Legion #445, the Schoolcraft County V.F.W. Post #4420 and the Taro Leaf 24th Infantry Division Association. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, picking morel mushrooms, going to hunting camp with his stepson Mark, and spending time with his family. Rex was selected as Grand Marshall of the 2011 Garden Fourth of July Parade.

He is survived by his wife, Judith M. Napora of Garden; son, John Napora of Bay City; daughter, Kay Napora of Bay City; stepson, Mark (Janet) Guertin of Garden; stepdaughters, Laura (Scott) Lucas of Garden and Penny (Robert) Vertz of Garden; grandchildren, Angela (Luke) Luskin, Heather Guertin, Tyler Lucas, Nicole Guertin, Samantha (Noah) Guertin, Leah Vertz, Logan Vertz, Kassie Napora and Tori Napora; great grandchildren, Hailey, Taylor, Leland, Kashus and Wyatt; special nephew, Amil (Ali) Handeguand; mother-in-law, Freda Farley of Garden; along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Frank "Pete" Napora; and his sister, Deloris "Peaches" Handeguand.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm, Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Garden. Funeral services will follow at 2:30 pm, at the funeral home with Pastor Darrel Pizzala officiating. Burial will be in the New Garden Cemetery at Garden Township.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Garden American Legion or to the Garden Historical Society.
