Donald E. MacLean, a longtime resident of Wenatchee, WA, took his last breath on November 21, 2013, surrounded by his sad, loving family at the warm home of Senior Delight in East Wenatchee, following a long, hard year recovering from hip surgeries. His 97 years of life were well lived and full of adventures. Don was enjoyed by all who knew him. Born in Bridgeport, WA in 1916, on a wheat ranch; his home burned down the day after he was born. He loved the farm and horses, but soon longed to join the U.S. Navy as a postmaster during World War II, serving in Guadalcanal and the Solomon Isles. Upon his discharge, he moved to "town" and attended Wenatchee Valley College, while working at the Cascadian Hotel holding various other jobs. He worked for Bonneville Power when he met Maycel Johnson. They married in 1950, then moved to Panama in 1952, where they raised their family for 21 wonderful years. Working with the Panama Canal Company as an Electrical dispatcher, Don was active with the AFLCIO. Weekends were full of exploring the country and out on the ocean. Every other summer was spent back in the Northwest with relatives and friends, many times driving his family across the entire U.S. to get there. Don enjoyed his membership with the Gyro Club, Elks Club, ROMEOs and Wenatchee Golf and Country Club to the fullest. In 1973, he retired and returned to make his home in Wenatchee, WA, where he worked with the Council On Aging and as a senior citizen state legislator intern. He was North Central Washington salesman for Mid Columbia Forklift.
Preceding him in death, awaiting him at home, is his wife, Maycel MacLean; his parents, A.E. MacLean and Martha Merritt Maclean; sisters, Dorothy Purdom and Delores Greenaway; and son-in-law, Louis Vogel. Don is survived and sorely missed by his son, Mark D. MacLean (Annie); daughter, Donella Vogel; deeply missed by grandsons, Louis M. Vogel of Orlando, Trevor M. Vogel of Tampa, and Mark E. MacLean of Wenatchee, who all spent a big part of their life with Grampa; many nieces and nephews; and in-laws, Duane and Janet Bolinger of Chelan.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in East Wenatchee. Arrangements by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
