Beverly M. Bloch

Beverly Marjorie Bloch, 92, formerly of Lake Chelan, WA, passed away March 1, 2014, in Longview, WA, with her family by her side. She was born August 19, 1921, to Helmer and Severia (Goranson) Asplund and was raised on the family farm in Wilton, ND. After high school, she graduated from Minot State Teacher's College and began teaching high school English and serving as Principal in Streeter, ND, during World War II. There, at a reception in his honor at his home-town school, she met First Lieutenant Orville E. Bloch, recent Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. They were married in 1945, and as their family grew, they lived in Japan (where Orv was on General MacArthur's staff); Panama; Washington D.C.; and other assignments, before settling down in Richmond Beach, WA, and then Lake Chelan. Bev moved to Longview in 2006. As a military wife, Bev raised four children - alone for several long stretches when Orv's tours of duty required overseas absences. She loved and nurtured her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Bev was an avid reader and also loved working crossword puzzles - developing a remarkable vocabulary over the years. The "lowly" pun was her favorite type of humor, second only to the funny things children say and do.
She is survived with love by a daughter, Rae (Sam) Wardle of Longview, WA; three sons, Robin (Geri) Bloch of Manson, WA, Stacy Bloch of Bellingham and David Bloch of Mountlake Terrace, WA; two grandsons, Michael Wardle of Longview and Andrew Bloch of Renton, WA; two granddaughters, Amy (Troy) Hawkes in Illinois and Lee (Matt) Hermen of Longview; three great-grandchildren, Joseph and Ian Hawkes, and Natalie Hermen; a brother, Darrell "Bud" (Betty) Asplund of Rochester, WA; a sister, Delrene Mills in North Dakota; and many nephews and nieces. Orv died too early in 1983. Three brothers, Oliver (Barbara), Bill (Gertie) and Paul (Ella) Asplund; and four sisters, Lucille (Oliver) Knudson, Elvira (Oliver) Noon, Peggy (Henry) Vandenberg and Natalie (Clem) Pfau also preceded Bev in death.
A Celebration of Bev's Life is planned for 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Ronald Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 17839 Aurora Avenue North in Shoreline, WA. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Columbia Funeral Service. Bev's ashes will be inurned during a Private Service at her husband's gravesite at Evergreen Washelli Memorial Park in Seattle. In lieu of flowers, Bev would have appreciated a donation to the Community Home Health & Hospice in Longview.
