OBITUARIES
ASHLEY:- James W. Ashley was born in Bath County, Kentucky, Feb. 26, 1838, and spent his early life in his native state. After finishing his schooling at Cynthiana, Kentucky, in 1859 he went to Boone County, Indiana, where he was married to Miss Mary E. Powell Sept. 7, 1871. The 19th of September, the same year he, with some other parties, migrated to Chariton County, Missouri, where he soon afterwards bought the farm on which he spent his last days. To this union were born 10 children- four boys and two girls survive, viz: Ora N. Ashley, Albert L. Ashley, Ella M. Shoop, Charles H. Ashley, Jesse Ashley and Odelia D. Ashley. All were present in his last sickness and death. He departed this life after a long and painfull sickness Aug. 18, 1904. While the end was expected for sometime it brings over us a shadow of darkness and a cloud of trouble through which all must pass who have near and dear ones. He was buried at the Powell church cemetery Aug. 19. He had lived for 33 years in the immediate vicinity where he died. The attendance at the funeral amid a downpour of rain speaks for itself as to his friends and citizenship.
