George Sanders
Birth: Jul. 8, 1894
Death: Apr. 4, 1950

World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Leeds, England, he served as a Corporal in the 1/7th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, British Army. During the Battle of the Somme France, on July 1, 1916, after an advance into the enemy's trenches, Corporal Sanders found himself isolated alone with a party of 30 men. He organized his defenses, detailed a bombing party and impressed upon the men that their duty was to hold the position at all costs. The next morning he drove off an attack by the enemy, rescuing some prisoners who had fallen into their hands. Later two bombing attacks were driven off and he was finally relieved after 36 hours. For bravery and leadership in the face of the enemy, he was invested with his Victoria Cross, by the King, at Buckingham Palace on November 18, 1916 and later achieved the rank if Captain. He died at age 56 in Leeds, England. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
