C. F. Whitney Succumbs
to Injuries Sustained in
Mather Mine Disaster

C. Field Whitney, aged 30 years, an assistant mine superintendent in the Mather mine, who was seriously injured and gassed in the terrible mine disaster, Saturday afternoon, died in the Waynesburg hospital, Monday morning, at 5:20 o'clock. No hope had been entertained for his recovery from the first.

Mr. Whitney was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Whitney, of Ohio. He was a graduate of the Carnegie School of Technology where he studied mining engineering. He served in the World war in France with an engineering unit.

After accepting a position at Mather Mr. Whitney was united in marriage with Miss Nellie Rogers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norval P. Rogers, of near Jefferson. His wife and two daughters, Elizabeth, aged four and Dorothy, aged nine months, survive. Mr. Whitney was one of the most popular young men in Mather. Words of praise were expressed by everyone who knew him for the kindness and thoughfulness toward those who worked under him.

The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, to 2:30 o'clock. Interment in the Jefferson cemetery.
