When Muffie's father was growing up in Wapakoneta Ohio, he had a friend named Fred Fisher. Fred had a sweet younger sister that Neil thought was special and said if he ever had a daughter he wanted to name her Karen. When Jan gave birth to a beautiful daughter they named her Karen and nicknamed her "Muffie" an endearing form of "Muffin". On Sunday, June 4, 1961 Karen fell while playing in a park in Seattle, WA. She had a bloody nose and had trouble controlling her eyes. Her parents immediately had her treated and tested for more serious medical problems. Tests showed Karen was suffering from "glioma of the pons" a malignant tumor growing within part of her brain stem. Over the next few months she failed and rallied and failed again, finally succumbing to pneumonia, a complication caused by her weakened condition.
