Benjamin Kennedy

Benjamin (1) was born on March 15, 1909 in the apartment where his family lived at 83 Stanton Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He grew up in the Yorkville section of Manhattan where the family (2) rented an apartment on East 92nd Street. In the late 1920s the family moved into their new home in the Midwood section of Brooklyn. Ben lived with his parents until the time of his marriage.

On August 12, 1930 Ben married Miss Dorothy Muriel Kennedy at the Municipal Building in Brooklyn, N.Y. The marriage was performed by Thomas P. Leary and witnessed by Charles Salg. The couple lived in Coney Island during their early marriage. Ben was called "Flash" by Dorothy and the nickname stayed with him.

To Dorothy and Ben were born:

Marilyn (1931- )
Joan (born 1932)
Jack (1935-2011)
Karen (born 1941)

Dorothy and Ben divorced in the mid-1940s.

Ben then married the former Ruth Boles of North Carolina and became father of Bennett Kennedy.

One of Ben's greatest enjoyments in life was to travel to new locales, experience other ways of life and meet new people. In 1935 he drove cross country with his first wife Dorothy and daughters Marilyn and Joan to visit his Father-in-Law, actor Tom Kennedy, in Los Angeles. This love of travel also carried over to Ben's professional life and enabled him to advance in his career as an electrician. In the mid-1940s he was on assignment in Alaska and in 1949 he worked in Guam. In October of 1953 Ben and his second wife Ruth vacationed in England

Ben retired from his work as an electrician in the early 1950s and became the proprietor of Ben's Tavern in Hoboken, New Jersey.

In the late 1960s Ben was diagnosed with cancer. He received treatment at Caledonian Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. During this time he reached out to his children Joan, Karen, Marilyn and Jack. Together, they enjoyed riding around Coney Island in his red Cadillac with the top down on warm summer days. He also was visited by his former wife, Dorothy.

Near the end of his life Ben reaffirmed his faith as Judaism. He was interred at Mount Moriah Cemetery in New Jersey on January 4, 1970. At the time of his passing, Ben was survived in the family by the children of his two marriages, his first wife Dorothy Kennedy Ricciardi, his second wife Ruth Boles Kennedy, and his Grandchildren including Dorothy by his daughter Karen; John, Tom and Mikki Genevieve (3) through his daughter Joan and her husband Tony Milone.
