Poet, editor. Raised in Roseville, California, the daughter of Placer County pioneers, Joseph and Louise Smart. Her father was born in the small gold-mining Sierra Nevada town of Dutch Flat (his father Daniel Smart coming to California in 1851 during the Gold Rush). Joyce attended Stanford University and later married well-known writer John Fante. She was a resident of Mailbu for over 50 years; she passed away at the age of 91.
