US Congressman. Elected as a Jacksonian to represent New York's 14th District in the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses, he served from 1833 to 1837. Gillet studied law privately in Canton, New York, was admitted to the bar and became an attorney in Ogdensburg, where he also served as Postmaster (1830 to 1833). He was not a candidate for renomination to Congress in 1836. In later life he worked for the US Treasury Department as a Register and Solicitor, served as New York Assistant Attorney General from 1855 to 1858, and was a Solicitor of the Court of Claims (1858 to 1861). He retired from public life in 1867 and settled in Washington DC. Gillet wrote a book, "The Federal Government: Its Officers and their Duties", published in 1872.
