A native of Salina, Kansas, Washington was publisher of the Los Angeles Sentinel from 1974 until her death from cancer on November 30,1990 in the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center Chalet in Los Angeles. She succeeded her husband, Colonel Leon H. Washington, Jr., who founded the black-owned newspaper in 1933, after his death on June 17,1974. She became, in essence, assistant publisher after Colonel Washington suffered a stroke in 1948.Mrs. Washington was beloved, honored and highly respected by all who met and worked for her. She was active in many civic, women and civil rights associations in the Los Angeles area. She was also once a brilliant photographer and an astute businesswoman of the highest caliber.
