Charles the son of Phyllis M. Maguire, stepson of John F. Maguire of Avon MA, and the son of Henry Strafello enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on January 29 1968 in Boston MA. He arrived in Vietnam on July 16 where he was assigned to and served with Company I, 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

In October, Company I was under the OPCON (Operational Control) of the 7th Marines participating on Operation MAUI PEAK in Quang Nam Province. On the last day of the operation at dawn while preparing to withdraw the troops from the field Company I was located approximately three kilometers south of Thuong Duc in the vicinity of Dei Hiep (3)when a large number of grenades where thrown into the Marines defensive perimeter. Multiple explosions killed three, and wounded eleven men. Following the grenade attack the Company was hit with a barrage of enemy 82mm mortar fire which killed two more Marines and wounded fourteen. One of the casualties was PFC Strafello who was killed as a result of multi fragmentation wounds from an explosive device.
