Michael the son of James Sullivan who predeceased his son, and Rosemary McGilvary, dear brother of sisters, Rosemary, Kathleen Sullivan, and step sister Joan McGilvary all of Dorchester enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on June 27 1966 in Boston MA. He arrived in Vietnam on July 17 1967 where he was assigned to and served with Company L BLT (Battalion Landing Team) 3/1, 9th MAB, FMFPAc.


During the first weeks of February the BLT continued operations in northern Quang Tri Province participating on Operation BADGER CATCH. On February 8, Company L engaged the NVA northeast of the village complex of My Xe Chanh and the Song Cua Viet (River) with the enemy firing 82mm mortars. During the exchange of fire, three Marines were wounded, one of them mortally. One of the casualties was PFC Sullivan who was killed from hostile rifle fire.
