On March 9, 1960, John Fonda, 27, assistant district ranger at Grand Teton National Park, drowned in the Snake River when the ice broke while he was skiing across it during a backcountry patrol. Gale Wilcox, 48, the district ranger, then died of exposure while trying to save Fonda.
