Actor. He will be best remembered for playing 'Captain Binghamton's' bumbling aid "Lieutenant Elroy Carpenter' in the TV series "McHale's Navy" (1962 to 1966). He was also known for his role of saloon proprietor 'Tommy Kelsey' in the TV series "All in the Family" (1971 to 1976). He began his career in radio at the age of eleven in 1936, notably with the series "The Daily Mirror Radio Gang" and following service as a B-29 navigator with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, he returned to radio and provided the voice for the character 'Archie Andrews'. Hastings went on to appear in scores of TV programs into the 2000s. He was also known for his voice work in animated superhero TV series including "Batman" and "Superman". His younger brother Don Hastings also became an actor. He died from pancreatic cancer. (bio by: C.S.)
