Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Born in Chandpur in present day Bangladesh, he was graduated from Feni College in 1952. He was serving as headmaster of Bamni Junior High School in Companyganj thana of Noakhali district when he was selected by the Provincial Public Service Commission to join government service. He was elected vice chairman of Chandpur Municipality in 1959. He was arrested in December 1964, and was released in time for the National Assembly election, when he was elected a member of the National Assembly in 1965. In 1966, he was elected as the organizing secretary of East Pakistan Awami League. He was one of the architects of so called mass upsurge of 1969, and actively participated in the War of Liberation in 1971. After the successful separation of Bangladesh from Pakistan, he became the Minister of Rehabilitation in the first cabinet of Bangladesh. In 1985 he was made the Minister of Post and Telegraph, and in 1986 he was elected Prime Minister, serving for two years. He continued in government service until his death at 80.
