Furniture maker. The business partnership of John Meads and William Alvord (1766-1853) produced America's most artistically sophisticated nineteenth-centruty furniture. Meads & Alvord was New York state's premier Neoclassical furniture firm, and they served customers throughout the Hudson River Valley. After the Erie Canal was completed in 1825, making it possible to ship furniture to distant buyers, their business grew to encompass the western United States. Meads & Alvord adapted popular Grecian and Gothic Revival designs and their unique decorations, such as hand carved melon feet on tables and desks, became increasingly popular in US furniture making.
