Shirley Jones was born in Salem, Oregon, the daughter of Edward and Ellen Peterson. She grew up on Boone Road with many siblings and nearby relatives, on what was then where Salem met the country. She attended Liberty, Leslie, Salem HS, and took classes at OCE. She was bursting with energy all her life. From the time she woke to the time she went to bed, she never seemed to tire, her strength and stamina serving her well as she took in life and teamed with her husband of 59 years, Ron Jones, to build up from modest means to a comfortable life. Not a day went by that Shirley didn't find something to laugh about. She stayed busy and fought cancer tenaciously to the end, going peacefully when time ran out.

Shirley met Ron Jones in 1952 and two years later they were married. Together they adventured to Georgia, New Mexico, Arizona and California, before returning to Oregon to start their careers and be near their families and raise their own. They were best friends for life, taking care of each other until his death seven months before hers.

Although she loved to tell stories and talked endlessly about practically everything, for Shirley, action always spoke louder than words. Shirley was wife, a mother, a grandmother, played a big role in raising her siblings, and took in or took care of many relatives and non-relatives in times of need. If the family was short on money she thought nothing of taking on extra jobs in addition to her full-time work as an office manager. On the weekends she might pile the kids in the car to go pick fruits and vegetables at the local farms. If they picked 100 lbs., she picked 200. She was appalled at segregation in the south and quietly took a seat at the back of the bus.

She was in the Eagles Drum and Bugle Corp as a child, learned violin and guitar as an adult, and she and Ron danced their entire lives, from swing to square, to western to disco - if it had a good beat, they were first on the floor. She loved to garden and adored watching movies (she was a descendant of actress Lillian Russell). She was a collector of glass and often restored antique furniture. For years she and Ron played in a bridge club with friends, and she loved playing games, especially scrabble. She loved to travel and went to Australia, Denmark and other countries, but her favorite place of all was the Oregon coast where she could take her shoes off and wander on the beach. She was an early adopter of personal computers, smart phones and other technology, recognizing their usefulness for office work, networking with friends, and aiding in her contributions to genealogy, both on her own family history and the history of others.

Shirley is survived by sons Greg, Chris and Eric (wife Katie), granddaughters, Dallas, Brittani, Olivia and Lily, grandson Crew, great grandchildren, Josiah and Esther, sisters Lorraine and Sandy, and brothers Ted, Bill, and Bob.

Shirley's remains will be placed at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland next to her husband Ron Jones. Friends and relatives are invited to an informal Celebration of Life and potluck gathering at their home of 50 years in Salem. RSVP to [email protected] or 541-505-1870. Condolences can be mailed to 708 W. 26th Ave., Eugene, OR 97405. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made to the Willamette Heritage Center.
