Henry C. Keely was born in Pennsylvania, the son of Sebastian Keely and Catherine Schultz.

He grew up in Bluffton, Wells County, IN. and his family is listed in the 1860 census: father Sebastian age 58 born PA., mother Catherine age 54 Born PA., Sisters Harriett 29, Satia 24, Kate 18, Maria 14, and brother James 21. Henry is shown as 16 years old and all the family were born in Pennsylvania.

He enlisted in Bluffton, IN. on Sep 1, 1861 in Company G. 12th Indiana Infantry a one year regiment being discharged in 1862. The regiment was reorganized as a 3 year regiment and Henry enlisted July 1, 1862 at age 21 as a musician and was appointed Principal Musician on Aug 12, 1862.

The regiment was rushed to Richmond, KY to repel Gen. Kirby Smith's Confederate invasion of Kentucky. The regiment was captured, loosing 173 killed and wounded. After being exchanged, the regiment took part in the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, TN, the relief of Knoxville, and then in Sherman's North Georgia Campaign resulting in the capture of Atlanta. During this campaign the regiment had 110 killed and wounded. They then took part in Sherman's "March to the Sea" and north through the Carolinas. He was discharged on June 8, 1865.

Following the war, Henry moved to Illinois where he married Isabel E. Woods, daughter of James Woods and Sarah Morrison.
In the 1880 census of Whitehall, Greene Co, IL Henry is shown as a 34 year old photographer living with his 31 year old wife Belle and sons Harold 5, and Carl 3.

Beginning on May 12, 1891 Henry received an Army Invalid Pension and following his death hi wife Isabel E. Keely received a Army Widows Pension beginning on Oct 4, 1912.

Henry was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic Post #5 in Chicago, IL.

In the 1910 census of Chicago Henry is listed as 66 years old with wife Belle E age 61, son Karl K. 33, daughter in law Ella W. age 30 and grandson Earle K. Keely age 5.

When Henry died on Sep 10, 1912 he is described as 68 married, living at 1340 S. Albany Ave., Chicago and a station agent by occupation. He was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery on Sec 12, 1912. His wife Isabel "Belle" Keely died on May 20, 1920 age 72 and was buried in Arlington Cemtery Cook Co., IL.
