Actress. She will perhaps be best remembered for playing 'Maudie Atkinson' in the motion picture drama "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962). Her father was an American diplomat, she was born in Munich, Germany and raised in Paris, France, where she received her schooling. She later studied acting at Manhattanville College followed by Sanford Meisner's Acting School, prior to returning to Germany, where she made her film debut in "Der Ruf" (1949). In 1950, she initiated her lengthy association with Broadway in the short-lived play "The Tower Beyond Tragedy" and began to appear on television during that decade. She originated the part of 'Dorothy Cleves' in the stage hit "Any Wednesday" (1964 to 1966) and repeated the role in the film adaptation of the same name in 1966. Her last Broadway show was "Waiting in the Wings" (1999 to 2000). She received an Emmy Award for her portrayal of 'Sara Delano Roosevelt' in the TV-movie "Eleanor and Franklin" (1976) and played the part of 'Dottie' in the Oscar garnered Fred Zinnemann film "Julia" (1977). She died from cancer.
