Melvin A. Whipka, 83, of Davenport, Iowa, died Monday, October 25, 2010 at his home. Funeral and Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, October 29th at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 417 Main Street, Davenport. Visitation will be held from 4-8:00 P.M. Thursday at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. The family prefers memorials to the Handicapped Development Center, in lieu of alternate tributes.
Mr. Whipka was born in 1927 to August and Ann Marie Whipka. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard, and shortly thereafter married Maxine Weifert. She died in 1956. On February 18, 1961, he married Audrey McGowan in Davenport. She died June 20, 2008. He was employed with Oscar Mayer for 25 years, retiring in 1979. Together with his wife, Audrey, they were Shaklee Distributors in the Quad City area. His memberships included St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Moose Lodge, and Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his daughter, Lori Martinez of Davenport; step-daughter, Nancy (Bill) Bolton of McGregor, Iowa; step-sons, William (Judy) Sawvell of Phoenix City, Alabama, and Jerry Sawvell of Mobile, Alabama; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to both wives, he was preceded in death by two grandsons, four brothers and three sisters.
