Per the funeral article in the Sacramento Bee [March 10, 1949], Zentaro was killed in action while with the 442nd Infantry Regiment Combat Team. He was a graduate of Woodland High School where he starred on the football team. Before entering the army in February 1941, he worked with his father, the late Ikutaro Akiyama, on the family truck farm in Yolo County. Zentaro was survived by his mother Tane (nee Uyeno) Akiyama; brothers Soji, Yoshimi, Yone, Akira, and Kazuo; and sister Asae.
