Mary was the daughter of Col. Pierse Long Jr. who served in the New Hampshire First Regiment during the Revolutionary War. Her great grandfather was Col. Shadrach Walton who had a distinguished career as the head of the New England forces during the French and Indian Wars. At his death, he was the president of the New Hampshire Governor's Council.

She married her childhood sweetheart, Tobias "Toby" Lear who was the personal secretary to Gen. George Washington, and they lived in the Washington's home in Philadelphia where Polly and Martha became fast friends. Their child, Benjamin Lincoln Lear was born in the Washington home and President George Washington was his god father.

Polly died in the Yellow Fever epidemic that hit Philadelphia in the 1790s. Hers was the only funeral that George Washington attended after he became President.

Polly's story can be found in Bruce Chadwick's book, "The General and Mrs. Washington."
