Sports Figure. He will be best remembered as the proprietor/coach and player for the Washington Generals (the traditional opponent of the Harlem Globetrotters). Born to Russian-Jewish parents, he began his lengthy association with basketball as a star player at South Philadelphia High School. He guided the school to a city championship in 1940. He continued his athletics at Villanova University, prior to his service with the United States Army during World War II. After returning home, he played for the Philadelphia SPHAS of the American Basketball League. He experienced a championship title with the Baltimore Bullets of the Basketball Association of America, which was a precursor to the National Basketball Association. In 1952, he founded the New Jersey Generals who went on to tour and play thousands of exhibitions games with the Globetrotters. Klotz lost roughly 14,000 times during his years with the Generals.
