U.S. Congressman. Educated at Marshall Academy, he became an instructor at the academy in 1844, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1853 and commenced to practice law in Vandalia, Illinois. He also edited his father’s newspaper and was judge of Fayette County, (1853-57). In 1865, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Congresses, serving until 1869. After his term, he moved to Colorado, in 1870 and continued the practice of law. He was president of the Denver School Board, (1871-74), a member of the Territorial council in 1874 and a delegate to the constitutional convention of Colorado in 1875. He also was elected to the first Legislature of the State of Colorado, in 1878 and appointed Commissioner to revise the laws of the state in 1881. Bromwell was also an active Freemason, served as Grand Orator of the Grand Lodge of Colorado and established five lodges in the state.
