The Rev. Fernando H. Salazar, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 14, 2014. Born in San Antonio, TX on December 26, 1925 to Francisco and Francisca Salazar, he was the youngest of 12 children. He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Scurry, a minesweeper supporting the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa during World War II. He graduated from Trinity University, San Antonio, with a BA in philosophy and religion, attended Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University, and was an ordained minister of the United Methodist Church for 17 years. He worked for Urban Renewal Community Service in Artesia, NM. He was ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church, Diocese of the Rio Grande in 1968, serving in Albuquerque and Espanola. He served as rector of St. James' Episcopal Church in Las Cruces for twenty years and retired in 1994. Fernando was preceded in death by his parents, ten siblings, and his first wife, Ruth Lydia Salazar. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Elizabeth; son Fernando Joel Salazar and wife Allison of Dallas; daughter Martha Elizabeth Salazar of Austin; daughter Cynthia Ruth Winters and husband Steven of Las Vegas, NV; sister Lilia Rogers of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren Daniel and Ruth Salazar of Dallas; granddaughter Celina Stops of Las Vegas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation with the family Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Getz Funeral Home, Las Cruces, from 5-7 p.m. Funeral service will be at Church of St. Clement, 810 N. Campbell in El Paso, Texas at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 21. Burial will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Church of St. Clement, St. James Episcopal Church, or Mesilla Valley Hospice.
