Silas was the son of Alexander Polk and Julia Embree of Gibson County, IN.

Silas served in Company A. 80th Indiana Infantry in the Civil War. He enlisted age 19 at Princeton, IN on Aug 11, 1862 and served until discharged on June 22, 1865 at Salisbury, NC.

Silas is shown in the 1850 census of Patoka, Gibson Co., IN as 7 years old living with his parent. He appears at the same location with his parents in 1860 age 17.

He married Emily J. McMillan and in the 1870 census of Patoka, IN he is listed as a 27 year old surveyor with his wife Emily J. age 37, daughters Vesta 15, Seba 6, Laura 3, and sons Albert 9, Lucius 8 and daughter Julia 11.

Silas received an Army Invalid Pension for his service in the Civil War and following his death his wife Emily received an Army Widows Pension.

Silas was a member of Grand Army of the Republic Post 5 of Chicago, IL.

When he died he was described as a 70 year old male born 1846 residing at 4708 Champlain Ave., Chicago, and buried at Rosehill Cemetery on Feb 19, 1916.

His wife Emily J. McMillan Polk was born on Jan 25, 1842 in Gibson Co., IN. and she was residing at 406 N. 12th St., Mt Vernon, IL when she died on Dec 20, 1933 age 91 and buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, Jefferson Co., IL.
