He had four siblings: Adele, Virginia, Arizona & John E. Jr (Per census records).

He graduated from the public high school in Anna and Union County Academy, a Presbyterian institution located in his home town. Later he attended Lake Forest University and studied music in Chicago. After his graduation he entered business with his father in Anna, until he left to answer the call to take up organized Sunday school work in the state of Maine. There he held the position of general secretary of state work from 1904 to 1913, going from there to the same post in the state of Arkansas. He had become a member of the Presbyterian church at the age of 18 while in college, and served his church as teacher, Sunday school superintendent, choir leader and elder. His work in Maine and Arkansas stand as a memorial for thorough organization, consecration and loyalty. He was forced to resign in Arkansas because of the delicate health of his only daughter, who later died in San Bernardino, California. When they arrived in San Bernardino, he became an elder of the First Presbyterian church of San Bernardino and superintendent of the Sunday school.
He spent a year of overseas service during the world war.

Last rites were held from the First Presbyterian church with the Rev. Alvah Grant Fessenden officiating. His wife, Elizabeth, son, John Edwin Lufkin and sister-in-law, Miss Abigail Lawrence accompanied the body to Anna, Illinois for burial beside his daughter, Chole Allen Lufkin.
