Mother Mary Sandifer, 81, affectionately known as Lonnie Mae or Granny to those whom she knew and loved, went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 14, 2003, at 10:30 p.m., in Detroit, at the home of her loving daughter, Irene Middleton and family.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, Benton Harbor. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Crystal Springs Cemetery, Benton Harbor.
Mother Sandifer was born June 9, 1922, to the union of the late Levi and Lula (Whitehead) Sykes in Duckhill, Miss. Mother Sandifer confessed her hope in Christ at an early age. She joined hands to the late Elder Louis C. Sandifer on Dec. 24, 1945, in Clarksdale, Miss. To that union 13 children were born.
Mother Sandifer served as church mother at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ, Hayti, Mo., under the leadership of the late Elder John Lofton and under Elder Sam Rivers at Revival Center Church of God in Christ. Her final church home was Tabernacle Church of God in Christ under Overseer Howard Thomas. There she was also a church mother. Mother Sandifer loved the Lord dearly. Her favorite songs were -- "Believe I'll Run On And See What The End Is Going To Be," "Somehow I've Got To Make This Journey," and "Yes, Lord".
Mother Sandifer and Elder Sandifer were adopted foster parents for 17 years in Benton Harbor. She also worked at the Holiday Inn for many years.
Mother Sandifer leaves to cherish her memories 10 children: six daughters -- Lenora Sandifer, Mary (Greg) White, Shirley (James) Windmon, all of Benton Harbor, Irene Middleton, Fannie Davis of Detroit, Rosie (Walter) Murphy of Memphis, Tenn.; four sons -- Audie Johnson of Benton Harbor, James (Betty) Sandifer of Hayti, Mo., Robert (Val) Sandifer of Toledo, Ohio, Elder Louis (Alice) Sandifer of Detroit; three daughters-in-law -- Leanna Sandifer, Ja-Ja Sandifer, Johnnie Mae Johnson; 103 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 56 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; sons-in-law; daughters-in-law; and one special friend, Rosie Rivers; one sister, Sallie Rice of Mississippi; one brother, Robert Skyes of Hayti, Mo.
Mother Sandifer was preceded in death by her parents, Levi and Lula Sykes; husband Elder Louis Sandifer in 1995, one daughter, Louise Moore in 2000, two sons, Leon and Pastor Joe Sandifer in 2003; one sister, Hazel Garner, her brothers -- George, Booker and Jimmie Anderson.
Mother Sandifer will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
