Silas Samuel Foster was born on November 4, 1862, in Alabama, the son of Matthew Foster (1823–1900) and Pheriby A Conner (1824–1900)

Educated in Columbus, Georgia, he was married 1st on May 2, 1884 in Muscogee County, Georgia to R Caroline "Carrie" Smith ( –1886) and he was married 2nd on October 3, 1887 in Muscogee County to Roxanne Lorene "Roxie" Gann (1872–1932). He and his 2nd wife Roxie moved to Nashville in 1901.

Silas was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, West Nashville Lodge 612. He was also a boilermaker for Nashville, Chattanooga & Saint Louis Railroad and retired in 1931.

Living with his daughter Mrs. Walter L Brown at 912 Gilmore Avenue, Nashville, he was 80 years old and a widower when he died at the home of angina pectoris on April 9, 1943.

Survivors included daughters, Mrs J W Woodall, Mrs E C Pope and Mrs Walter L Brown, all in Nashville and Mrs Margaret Waggaman of Detroit, Michigan and sons J P Foster and S L Foster of Nashville.

Funeral Services were held on April 12th at West Nashville Presbyterian Church, and the burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
