Gerald "Jerry" Carl Schmitz was born May 17, 1952, the son of Edmund and Irene (Hageman) Schmitz in West Union.

He attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Festina and graduated from South Winneshiek High School in 1970.

Jerry Schmitz farmed near Festina until he took a job as a sub-carrier in the Fayette Post Office in 1991. In 1996 he started as a rural mail carrier in Calmar. Jerry Schmitz also worked part-time at the Farmers Coop in Fort Atkinson.

He married Marti Tieskotter Sept. 9, 1978 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Little Turkey and to this union four children were born. They later divorced.

Jerry Schmitz enjoyed playing softball and was an avid sports fan. He was a member of the Rural Mail Carriers Association.
Gerald "Jerry" Schmitz was preceded in death by his father, Edmund Schmitz, on Nov. 10, 1973 and one son: Jon Michael Schmitz.
