Opera Singer. A mezzo soprano, she is remembered for her many years as a star of the Poznan Opera. Raised in central Poland, she studied at the Music Conservatory of Kalisz and with private teachers prior to her January 17, 1960 Poznan Opera debut as Olga from Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin". Over the years she performed much of the alto repertoire, both standard pieces including Preziosilla of Verdi's "La Forza del Destino", Princess Eboli from the same composer's "Don Carlos", the title anti-heroine of Georges Bizet's "Carmen", and the witch Azucena in Verdi's "Il Trovatore", and non-standard at several of Europe's major venues, though Poznan remained her home. Miss Imalska was a noted recital and oratorio artist, was awarded the Knights Cross of the Order of Poland, lived out her days in Poznan, and died of the complications of a fall suffered at her home leaving a significant recorded legacy. She was sometimes billed under her married name, Imalska-Jankowiak.
