Politician, musician. Ernesto Ramos Antonini was a prominent political figure in the island of Puerto Rico. He dedicated his life to social justice causes. He was the author of a measure that ensured the provision of shoes to 65,000 children that attended public school and could not afford them. He also wrote a law that allowed peasants to buy milk cows in installments to improve the nutritional conditions of the most disadvantaged classes. In addition to his political contributions he was also an excellent pianist, taking lessons in Ponce, were he was raised. While he was studying law in Río Piedras, he would play the piano to go along the silent movies showing up theaters. He became a lawyer at age 22 and soon after that he became involved with Luis Muñoz Marín. In 1932, he was elected to the House of Representatives. Six years later he became one of the co-founders of the Popular Democratic Party of Puerto Rico. He gained fame as a lawyer when he defended the members of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party as part of the Ponce Massacre. He was also an active member in the International Workers Congress. He went to the U.S. Congress to defend Puerto Rican workers who were being abused by the American companies established in the island. In 1945, he was named President of the House of Representatives, a position which he held until his death in 1963. There is a school in Ponce, a theater in Barceloneta, a plaza in Mayagüez and a building inside the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus named in his honor. Law Number 166 in Puerto Rico was approved to proclaim every April 24 to be "Ernesto Ramos Antonini Day". Ramos Antonini was a also a key person in the foundation of Orquesta Sinfónica de Puerto Rico. The Escuela Libre de Música de Puerto Rico is named after him. There are streets in Ceiba, Cidra, Mayagüez, Trujillo Alto, and Salinas bearing his name.
