LEROY CITIZEN DIES JOHN BERRY CRAIG, NATIVE OF McLEAN COUNTY, EXPIRES AT AGE OF 86
John Berry Craig died at his home in Leroy on Tuesday at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 16 days. Death followed an illness of about a week, altho he has been in poor health for the past seven years, at which time he was stricken with blindness, the result of cataract. he bore his affliction with remarkable patience and fortitude.
He was born at Randolph Grove, near Downs, on Feb. 4, 1830, and was the son of Ebenezer and Mary Ann Craig, and the third child in a family of seven children. Only one, Ebenezer Craig, Jr., of Leroy, survives. His parents died when he was a child. In young manhood he was married to Rebecca McClurg. To them two children were born, Elizabeth Dotson and Anna Duien, both of whom sruvive. His wife died in a few years after their marriage. On November 11, 1869, he was married to Martha Keith Hirst. To this union were born six children, two preceding him in death. The surviving children are Mrs. David M. Cooley, Moqeaqua; Ura and Mattie at home; and Thomas J. of Leroy.
He united with the Presbyterian church in Leroy, when he was about the age of 10 years, and remained a faithful attendant as long as his health permitted.
The funeral services will be held at the family residence on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. W. V. McAdoo in charge. Burial will be in the family lot in Oak Grove Cemetery.
