Marcelo immigrated to Hawaii on the steamship Manchuria arriving in Honolulu on 23 Jan 1910

Recruiting of Filipinos for work on sugar plantations began in 1901 and the first Filipinos arrived in 1906. By 1910, there were 2,915 in Hawaii, so Marcelo was among one of the first waves. Immigration from the Philippines increased to about 3000 per year starting in 1911.
