Born Arthur William Schult, he first distinguished himself on the baseball diamond while attending White Plains High School and continued his athletics at Georgetown University. Signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent, he served with the United States Army during the Korean War, prior to marking his Major League debut on May 17, 1953. He played in seven games for the Yankees who went on to win the 1953 World Series. In 1957, he produced career-highs in hits with 74 and RBIs with 39. In 164 regular season games, he compiled 111 hits with a lifetime .264 batting average.
