Deceased Name: Chillicothe resident Howard Lee Mantzey, 97, died Monday, April 18,

Howard Lee Mantzey, 97 of Morningside Center in Chillicothe, Mo., formerly of Dawn, Mo., died Monday, April 18, 2011 at Morningside Center.
Howard was born Jan. 12, 1914 in Dawn, Mo., the son of Charles Albert Mantzey and Elva Mae Knox Mantzey. On April 28, 1945 Howard married his wife of nearly 66 years, Opal Grace Watkins in Chillicothe, Mo. She survives of the home.

Mantzey was a graduate of Dawn High School.

Howard was a life long farmer in the Dawn community.

He was a member of the Dawn Federated Church, the Dawn Community Improvement Association, Collar Cemetery, and he served on the Board of Directors of Community Bank of Dawn which became Bank-Midwest for 32 years.

He enjoyed farming and spending time with his family.

Howard is survived by his wife, Opal Mantzey; daughter, Lois Benham and husband Steven; four grandchildren, Jalaine Zelmer Lamp and husband Shawn, Tara Zelmer Skipper and husband Jim, Lindy Zelmer Crowe and husband Rich, and Charles Benham; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha James; son-in-law Tom Zelmer; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Nancy Zelmer; two sisters, Velma Evans and Louise Pruitt and an infant brother.

There has been a cremation.

Memorial/Celebration services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2011 at Heritage Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Mo., with a visitation following the service.

There will be a private burial at Collar Cemetery.
