Danza composer and Music teacher. Morel Campos started his music career in Ponce at the age of 8. He learned to play practically every brass instrument and eventually became one of the founders and directors of the "Ponce Firemen's Band", which was later renamed the Ponce Municipal Band. He then became a student of Manuel Gregorio Tavárez, "The Father of the Danza". Morel Campos had his own dance orchestra, "La Lira Ponceña." Most of his danzas were written for dancing. He modified his compositions so that they may also be played on piano. Morel Campos also composed over 600 musical pieces, including waltzes, operas, symphonies, marches and overtures. "Maldito Amor" and "Felices Días" are two of his beloved titles. In 1984, the government of Puerto Rico declared May 16 to be celebrated annually as "Juan Morel Campos Day". After careful research of unpublished music scores at the Archivo General de Puerto Rico, Nélida Muñoz Marín de Frontera published the music book titled "Flores silvestres: danzas inéditas de Juan Morel Campos y catálogo temático" which include all of his known work. The Free School of Music Juan Morel Campos in Ponce was named after him, as was Juan Morel Campos Secondary School in Brooklyn, New York and a Jr. High School in Ponce.

Gravesite Details
Juan Morel Campos was originally interred at Cementerio Catolico Simon de Torres. His remains were exhumed on December 12, 1926 and transferred to the base of this statue.
