Ethel "Emmy" Grace Piper left this life at age 101 on May 29, 2004. She was born Nov. 5, 1902, in Garner, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Etta Pascoe Hocking. Raised in Galena, Ill., she moved to Billings in 1914. Here, she married Albert McCoy Piper. Their only child, Dean, was born a year later.
They lived in San Francisco from 1940 to 1944 where she worked at the Navy yard.
She and Albert returned to Billings for 10 years, then moved to Worland, Wyo., where she worked for Simon's grocery. Upon their return to Billings, Emmy worked at Sweetheart Bakery until her retirement in 1968.
Emmy was preceded in death by husband Albert; son Dean; nephews Eldon Piper and Robert Hocking; niece Verna Alice Nash; great-niece Sandra Piper Ostermiller and great-nephew Will Nash.
Survivors include nieces Martha Piper and Toddy Wertepney; great-nieces Judith Hocking Avery, Annette Hocking Morris, Mary Hocking Crowder; great-nephews William Thomas Hocking, Michael Robert Hocking and Patrick Edward Hocking; great-nieces Pamela Russell, Penny Piper and Dodie Hudson; great-nephews Vern Nash and Kim Nash; great-great-nieces and nephews abound; and great-great-great-nieces and nephews abound; and many loving friends.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 3, at the Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St. West, with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Smith West Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
